Egypt - Food Passport

To begin our passport of flavors we started with Egypt.... Here are some things we covered this week.

  • Writing in Hieroglyphics (the boys made place cards for our meal with our names written in hieroglyphics)
  • Making Egyptian necklaces (pictured above)
  • Finding Egypt on our world map (we also located Cairo and the Nile River)
  • Listening to words spoken in Arabic
  • Learning about mummies and King Tut (we also drew pictures of him)
  • Suez Canal
  • Currency in Egypt
  • Reviewed Ancient Egypt's history
  • Different types of food found in Egypt
  • Talked about Egypt's culture
  • Took an online tour of places in Egypt
  • Egypt's Flag (The flag of Egypt (Egyptian Arabic: علم مصر‎‎, IPA: [ˈʕælæm ˈmɑsˤɾ]) is a tricolour consisting of the three equal horizontal red, white, and black bands of the Arab Liberation flag dating back to the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. The flag bears Egypt's national emblem, the Eagle of Saladin centered in the white band.)

After spending the week learning all about Egypt, it was time for our meal! Our menu included:
  • Bechamel Pasta
  • Gebna Makleyah (cheese balls)
  • Biram Ruz (rice casserole)
  • Baklava (sweet pastry with chopped nuts, covered in honey)

It was truly an adventure trying the different types of food. After voting we all agreed the Bechamel Pasta was the best dish and the worst was Biram Ruz (it just lacked any type of flavor). The boys had a blast learning more about Egypt and trying some authentic cuisine.

A Boy Called Christmas - Review

Description:

Before there was Santa Claus, there was a young boy who believed in the impossible. . . . Lemony Snicket meets Elf in this warmhearted Christmas caper.

Eleven-year-old Nikolas—nicknamed “Christmas”—has received only one toy in his life: a doll carved out of a turnip. But he’s happy with his turnip doll, because it came from his parents, who love him. Then one day his father goes missing, and Nikolas must travel to the North Pole to save him.

Along the way, Nikolas befriends a surly reindeer, bests a troublesome troll, and discovers a hidden world of enchantment in the frozen village of Elfhelm. But the elves of Elfhelm have troubles of their own: Christmas spirit and goodwill are at an all-time low, and Nikolas may be the only person who can fix things—if only he can reach his father before it’s too late. . . .

Sparkling with wit and warmth, A Boy Called Christmas is a cheeky new Christmas classic-in-the-making from acclaimed author Matt Haig and illustrator Chris Mould.

My Review:

I received this 4 disc set and have fallen in love with the story. A Christmas story that helps your heart leap with joy. It brings Christmas into your home and puts laughter and love in your soul. I cannot begin to express how funny and wonderful this book is.. and the retelling on disc is perfectly made as well. This is a wonderful collection to enjoy with your children. A great Christmas story to being cheer into your home!

In remembering His Easter story—the greatest story ever told—your own will become that much sweeter.
The perfect companion for Lent, Devotions for Easter invites you to find the messages of hope and mercy God places in even the smallest moments of the season. Forty days of warm, inviting readings, prayers, scriptures, and beautiful images will take you through Christ’s journey toward the cross and the miracle of His resurrection. As new life emerges all around you, let your heart be filled with joyful worship of Christ and the renewal He brings.

My Review:

Easter is the perfect time to sit down with a good devotional and refresh your spirit and mind. This devotional takes 40 days and the author takes you on a journey through the Easter holiday with the Lord by your side. This devotional helps to open your heart and soul to the spirit around you. I have skimmed through the book and read a few devotions but I'm actually waiting for Easter break to truly "dive in".

This book would be a great gift for those in your life.. or for yourself.

Happy 11th Birthday Aidan!

Happy 11th Birthday to our oldest son, Aidan Michael!

11 years ago, God blessed us with our first baby boy. We are so proud of the young man you have become. You have such a big heart. Always helping those around you and teaching your younger brother all you have learned. You love animals and have such a gentle way with them. You love to fish, hunt, play video games, practice shooting and using your bow. You love old vehicles, learning about different places and you have a desire to travel.

Thank you for your patient and caring way. God has blessed you with many talents and I know He will continue to direct your path. Your desire to help others and always willing to give your all is a blessing to our family each and every day.

A few days before your birthday we celebrated at Auntie's house. You shared your birthday party with your cousin, Abigail, as she turned 15. You loved having a party with her. I know how much you care for her and see her as a blessing in your life. As we celebrated your birthday you were all smiles... I'm so happy you had a wonderful party.

As requested we took you to El Burrito Logo for your birthday. We had a great time and you truly enjoyed your Mexican dinner.

We love you Aidan! Happy Birthday!
