My Name Is Mahtob - Book Review

Book Description

Two decades ago, millions of readers worldwide thrilled to the story told in the international bestseller Not Without My Daughter—subsequently made into a film starring Sally Field—that told of an American mother and her six-year-old child’s daring escape from an abusive and tyrannical Iranian husband and father. Now the daughter returns to tell the whole story, not only of that imprisonment and escape but of life after fleeing Tehran: living in fear of re-abduction, enduring recurring nightmares and panic attacks, attending school under a false name, battling life-threatening illness—all under the menacing shadow of her father.
This is the story of an extraordinary young woman’s triumph over life-crushing trauma to build a life of peace and forgiveness. Taking readers from Michigan to Iran and from Ankara, Turkey, to Paris, France, My Name Is Mahtob depicts the profound resilience of a wounded soul healed by faith in God’s goodness and in his care and love. And Mahmoody reveals the secret of how she liberated herself from a life of fear, learning to forgive the father who had shattered her life and discovering joy and peace that comes from doing so.

My Review

Wow! I don't even know what to say after reading this book. First of all I am so happy that Mahtob Mahmoody wanted to share her story with us after many of us had saw/read a glimpse of the story before. This book will pull at your heartstrings. It was wonderful to read how Mahtob was able to move pass the pain and find forgiveness.. she has been able to live a full life which is a blessing to read.

I highly recommend this book. You will cry and cheer along with Mahtob and her life story.

Putter and the Red Car - Book Review

Book Description

Putter and the Red Car is the story of one family’s cross country road trip narrated by a lively Airedale terrier. The book incorporates ideas related to family, change, geography and adventure with a backdrop of bright colorful illustrations. It is a perfect book for the emerging reader, young children just learning about the world around them and those who love dogs – particularly Airedales.

My Review

This was a sweet read that my boys (ages 8 & 10) enjoyed as a read aloud. We are not moving (like Putter and his family did).. however, we are leaving in a few days for our first road trip. This book came right in time for them to enjoy Putters adventure. The author did a wonderful job of keeping the child's attention while reading the book. You feel as if you are on the trip along with Putter, seeing new places and playing with friends. This is a well written book that I'm sure it will be enjoyed by many children.

Book Description

Can These Two Friends from Opposite Worlds Find Love?

They've been best friends for years, but as high school ends, Zane Beck can't help but look at his Amish neighbor, Lila Lehman, with different eyes. Her controlling father sees only one future for Lila, though, and arranges for her to be courted by an upstanding young Amish man. When Zane sees the two together, his plans for the future crumble, and he impulsively enlists in the Army, following in his father's footsteps.

However, the passing of years and the distance between them isn't enough to halt their now hidden feelings for each other. If being together used to be difficult, it's now impossible, especially with the Amish opposed to war. Zane's service takes a dramatic turn when he's sent to Afghanistan. Being on the front line and the reality of taking a life has him questioning whether he can continue to serve or not. But all choices have consequences--both his and hers. With Lila preparing to marry another, will these one-time sweethearts ever find the life together that they both still long for?

Searching For Nannie B. - Book Review

Book Description

How would you be affected if your mother died giving you life? And how would such a loss affect your children? These questions are the foundation of many issues raised by the author, Nancy Owen Nelson, in her search for the missing pieces of a grandmother who in 1905 died giving the author’s mother life, all told in her wonderful memoir, Searching for Nannie B. It was a tragedy that seemed to affect multiple generations, the voids in identity and ill-spent guilt flowing from the stream of blood that kept mother from daughter, and then from granddaughter. But it was a search well-spent.

The Reverend Roger Mohr, First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit, may have said it best. “Often the tapestry of family history does not seem to offer us the sort of clarity about who we have become, and why. And sometimes the narrative tells us a story about ourselves that we do not wish to accept.”

Nancy Owen Nelson’s search resulted in raising more questions about herself, even as it answered questions about her mysterious grandmother. Nonetheless, in the end her journey toward discovery was one of startling self-awareness and connection. No matter whether you feel connected or lost in family, you will be unable to avoid the heartfelt pleasure and pain that comes from the author’s brave attempt to connect three generations of Southern women.

My Review

I was given the opportunity to review, Searching For Nannie B. by the author Nancy Owen Nelson. This is a book that I did not read quickly... this book takes some time to truly enjoy. Time to read.. sit it down and ponder what I had read... truly experience this story for myself.. and I loved every minute of it!

The authors Grandmother, Nannie B. died shortly after giving birth to her daughter (the authors Mother). This book details the authors journey of searching for her past history and finding love, loss and a connection to her family. Pictures are included in the book to help draw you even closer to Nannie B.

This book will leave you longing for your own "family history" adventure! This is a wonderful read and I'm sure you will enjoy it!
